DE.FASH.STRUCTION at Design Space curated by Khulood Thani (Founder of Bint Thani)
Signet Ring experienced the opening of DE. FASH.STRUCTION- telling stories through fashion, at the 1971-Design Space which is the regional design hub of the UAE. The exhibition sheds light through the medium of contemporary fashion on UAE's rich cultural heritage and modern references. DE.FASH.STRUCTION is curated by the creative Emirati designer Khulood Thani, the founder and driving force behind the clothing label Bint Thani.
The exhibition showcased established and emerging talent from the Gulf region and beyond. The designers in DE.FASH.STRUCTION engaged in the multi-faceted deconstruction technique in their freshly assigned project. In the global stage, the deconstructed look is taking the fashion scene by storm. In deconstructed technique, garments are purposefully left unfinished and its defining characteristics are the revealed linings, fraying and raw edges. The designers participating in the exhibition derived their inspiration from indigenous architecture, historical landmarks, nature and local lifestyle surrounding the region. Key items include Abayas, women and menswear, accessories, textile design and fashion photography. The event saw in attendance royalty, fashion influencers, designers and select media members.
The event was graced by the presence of Her Highness Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, daughter of the Ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Sultan III bint Mohammed Al Qasimi.
Esteemed photographer Saeed Khalifa, attempts at highlighting the traditions of hair styling and ornamental culture of the U.A.E. in the past, by photographing the deconstructed traditional hair styles in contemporary form of a high fashion editorial.
In this piece, designer Fatema Fardan is inspired by the rich history of pearling industry of the Arabian Gulf and specifically the U.A.E's diverse culture. The deconstructed elements of ropes, utensils, shells, strings, and fishnets then come together in a new interpretation of a checkered linen wizar ( cloth wrapped around the waist), to the national dress (Kandoora).
Designer Francesca Baldanzi used the rigidity of the Emirati craft of 'Talli' to create structure within her stunning short and floor length capes, as well within the bodices and sleeve detailing of this stunning piece
This piece is designed by Katya Kovtunovich, the talented young designer from Russia. In this work, Kovtunovich attempts at deconstructing the traditional approach to fabric, through using Sadou and rethinking its role as upholstery enabling it to be a fully functional high fashion fabric. The piece is also a clash of opposites; a corset ball gown is merged into a men's tuxedo, the feminine skirt is made with menswear tuxedo lapels fabric.
